entertainment central

I see a lot of movies and I read a lot of books, however, I'm not naturally mean, so I'll only put the good ones up here... and the REALLY bad ones.

here's something kind of on the entertaining side: I was watching The Man in the Iron Mask with my mum, and I got the idea to write something with the Musketeers. so, here is Me Talking to Musketeers

movies:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

okay,  here is a Dynamite Duo (Tim Burton and Johnny Depp) movie based on a Roald Dahl book, with that cute little Britty boy from Finding Neverland and 5 Children and It. ding ding ding, you have a winner! and the theatre lights haven't even begun to dim yet. and once they do, you get a sort of Edward Scissorhands-esque beginning credits before becoming immersed in the story, which everybody already knows. this is why I love remakes. it's so cool to see what a different director and cast can do with an old movie. (they should totally remake Doctor Zhivago.) my favourite things in the movie were: the Bucket house (doesn't everyone love a house that's falling over? it's just a cute sort of thing! it works for the Weasley house in Harry Potter 2.), and anything involving Willy Wonka. I'm not just being a lovestruck fourteen-year-old, but he really is so good-looking. and he's a great actor to boot. all in all, I give it five stars and a smiley: ***** ^_^

Manna from Heaven

my mother rented this because my sister and I couldn't agree on what to watch. I have only one word: EW!! do not see it unless you like pointless and stupid movies. the title is dumb enough - who uses the word "manna" anymore, anyway? (it means "money", by the way) and they don't even use it in the movie. the actors are, for the most part, okay, but the plot is flat and boring, and the concept doesn't interest me at all. I give it 1/4 star.

5 Children and It

well, this is a very "special"-type children's movie. I think it was a book too, which I haven't read. basically, during WW 1 (or 2, I dunno), these little Britty kids got evacuated to the country, to their uncle Albert's estate. there they find a secret portal to a pretty beach, where lives the odd little Sand Fairy. this is no storybook fairy. he's kind of a mix between a turtle, a sea monster, and a crab, but very cute in his own little way, and the most quotable character in the whole movie (besides uncle Albert's immortal "Horace... you're becoming ECCENTRIC." - like he should talk!!). it's just a cute movie, nothing really special. little kids would probably like it. I give it two stars: **

books:

Dog Handling
by Clare Naylor

it's books like this one that make me want to grow up very fast and jet off to Australia with my friends! however, main character Liv Elliot's circumstances for being in her friend's Australian beach house aren't at all enviable. she was just dumped by her fiancé right before their wedding, and she becomes a complete mess. (can you blame her?) then she runs into a decidedly sexy old ex, who she met in France when she was eighteen. her new gay Australian friends, Dave and James (the most hilarious drag queens to ever grace the page), tell her that the way to get a man is to treat him like a dog. surely it can't work? can it? but Liv is going to find out, and it's definitely going to be amusing. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a good read and a heroine to relate to. (also seems like the kind of book you'd want to read if you were just dumped by your fiancé or boyfriend.)

Blood and Chocolate
by Annette Curtis Klause
see my version of the cover!

do you like werewolves? does the idea of something supernatural, out of reach yet right in front of your nose, fascinate you? if the answer is yes, you should MOST DEFINITELY read this book. Vivian Gandillon (incidentally, "Gandillon" was the name of a late-16th century French werewolf... coincidence, I think not!) is a teenage werewolf, her pack living amongst the humans. she accepts herself as being half girl, half wolf... but then, she falls in love with Aiden, a "meat-boy", and she begins to question herself. is she human or beast? what tastes sweeter - blood or chocolate? (see, that's how it ties into the title!)

I'm glad we're sprechensie the same linguedie.
